Chapter 10 - The Woman in the Blue Coat|

Standing inside the elevator was a woman wearing a dark blue wool coat.
Her hair was silver-blonde, cut short around her jawline. She carried a sleek black leather briefcase, and her pale blue eyes—identical to Alexander's—swept across the room with cool, absolute authority.
Behind her stood four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Sarah Carter.
"Hello, Alexander," Sarah said softly, stepping out onto the marble floor.
Alexander backed away two steps, his face completely pale, his chest heaving. "Sarah... you're dead. The boat crashed..."
"The boat crashed because you hired a mechanic to cut the fuel lines," Sarah replied, her voice cold, steady, and devoid of fear. "Did you really think I wouldn't check the engine compartment before we left the dock?"
Elena stared at the woman in awe and terror. This was the stranger from the park. The gentle woman who had sat on the bench, given Sofie a juice box, and slipped the glowing green ring onto the child's thumb.
"Sarah," Alexander stammered, trying to regain his composure, adjusting his suit jacket. "You... you've been hiding for eight years? Working with federal agents?"
"I spent five years recovering from the injuries your men caused me," Sarah corrected, walking past him toward Elena and Sofie. "And I spent the last three years building a legal case that you couldn't bribe your way out of."

She dropped to one knee in front of Elena.
"I'm sorry, Elena," Sarah said gently, reaching out to stroke Sofie's dark hair. "I know this was cruel to keep you in the dark. But you were the only person I could trust to keep my daughter safe."
