Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Empire|

Marcus, seeing the writing on the wall, slowly lowered his sidearm and set it on the mahogany desk, stepping away with his hands raised.
"Marcus!" Alexander yelled, looking at his head of security in utter betrayal. "What are you doing?!"
"I'm not going to federal prison for you, Boss," Marcus said flatly. "The game is over."
Two FBI agents stepped forward, grabbing Alexander's arms and forcing them behind his back. The cold steel of handcuffs clicked loudly around his wrists.
"You can't do this to me!" Alexander screamed, thrashing against the agents' grip as he was dragged toward the elevator. "I built this city! I own this building! Sarah, you have nothing!"
Sarah stood tall, watching her brother with a calm, solemn expression as the elevator doors closed, cutting off his screaming voice forever.

Elena sat on the floor, holding Sofie tightly, her mind still trying to process the overwhelming reality of what had just occurred. Her life as a broke, struggling cleaning lady had ended in twenty minutes.
Sarah turned to Elena, walking over and sitting beside her on the pale rug.
"Are you okay, Elena?" Sarah asked gently.
Elena looked down at Sofie, then looked at Sarah. "What... what happens to us now?"
Sarah reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out an official legal folder.
"Under my estate's trust agreement," Sarah explained warmly, "Sofie inherits fifty-one percent of Carter Enterprises today. And as her legal co-guardian, you are granted full power of attorney, a permanent residence at the family estate, and a annual trust allowance of five hundred thousand dollars."

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Five hundred... thousand?"
"You saved my daughter's life by being a good mother, Elena," Sarah said, tears shining in her eyes. "Now it's my turn to take care of yours."
