CHAPTER 7 — THE PAPER TRAIL

Two weeks passed, but the tension inside the mansion only thickened. Lily had been enrolled in a prestigious private academy under the Whitmore name, her life transforming overnight from the daughter of an invisible servant to the most talked-about heiress in the city. Yet, she still snuck down the grand spiral staircase at night, seeking the comfort of the kitchen to sit with her mother, Anna, who refused to stop working, clinging to the routine she knew to keep her sanity.

"Mommy Anna," Lily whispered over a glass of warm milk, her eyes wide. "Why does Uncle Alexander look so angry all the time? He stares at his computer until the sun comes up."

"He's looking for answers, sweetie," Anna said softly, smoothing Lily's hair and fighting back tears. "Answers that should have been found eight years ago if we had just been brave enough."

Upstairs in the private study, Alexander was deep in the foundation’s encrypted digital archives. The copy of the files Claire had hidden in the white box was a roadmap, but several crucial digital coordinates were missing, protected by military-grade encryption.

"Look at this pattern," Alexander said, rubbing his bloodshot eyes and pointing at a recurring wire transfer on his laptop screen to a digital forensics expert Eleanor had hired. "Every single month for the last ninety-six months, exactly $50,000 has been transferred from our inner-city medical charitable fund to a private medical facility in upstate New York. It's labeled as an anonymous donation to The Haven Ridge Institute."

The expert tapped a series of keys, a wall of red code flashing across the monitor. "The account is heavily restricted, Mr. Whitmore. It requires a biometric bypass to view the patient roster. The entire digital infrastructure of that account was set up by Richard Lane's private legal firm."

Eleanor, who had been hovering over Alexander’s shoulder like a ghost, gripped the back of his chair so hard her knuckles turned white. "Haven Ridge isn't a hospital, Alexander. It’s a private, high-security psychiatric facility for the ultra-wealthy. A place where people go when their families have secrets they want to bury forever."

Alexander looked up at his mother, the horrifying, sickening realization dawning on both of them at the same time.

"Claire didn't run away, and they didn't kill her," Alexander breathed, his face losing all color. "They locked her away in a cage we paid for."
