Chapter 30

CHAPTER 30 — THE CLIFFHANGER
The realization hit Claire like a physical wave. The shoes—the sentimental heirloom she had protected for eight years, the objects her mother had died for—had been the tracking device all along. Their father had designed them to ensure that no matter where his children ran, the shadow trust could always locate the bloodline.
"We have to throw it away!" Claire screamed, reaching for the shoe.
"Too late," Alexander said, his eyes fixed on the exterior security monitors.
Outside the bunker’s concealed steel hatch, three heavily armored tactical helicopters were descending through the mountain fog. White-clad Vanguard commandos were repelling down the ropes, their weapons drawn, explosives already being planted on the reinforced doors.
The bunker shuddered as the first breaching charge detonated, throwing Claire and Anna to the floor. The steel doors began to buckle inward, sparks flying through the dark.
"Get behind me!" Alexander shouted, raising his assault rifle toward the entrance.
But before the doors could blow completely open, the main power grid of the bunker didn't just die—it was remotely overridden. The security monitors flickered one last time, replacing the camera feeds with a single, massive streaming video text line.
The text was written in an ancient, coded cipher that only Claire and Alexander had been taught as children by their father.
Translated, it read:
THOMAS IS NOT THE ELDEST. I AM.THE HELICOPTERS AREN'T HIS.CHOOSE WHICH FATHER YOU WANT TO BELIEVE.
The steel doors blew completely off their hinges in a blinding flash of white light and smoke. As the smoke cleared, a single figure walked through the fire—not a mercenary, but an elderly woman dressed in a pristine white coat, holding the matching blue leather shoe in her hand, her face completely identical to the portrait of Eleanor Whitmore’s supposedly deceased mother.

Claire’s voice was swallowed by the roar of the wind as she whispered into the smoke. "Grandmother...?"
The elderly woman raised a silenced pistol, but she didn't point it at Alexander or Claire. She pointed it directly at the tracking device inside the red shoe, firing a single shot that shattered the beacon into dust, leaving the room in pitch-black darkness as a new, unknown army swarmed the bunker.
