Chapter 25

CHAPTER 25 — THE SACRIFICE PLAY
The family retreated into the mansion, locking the heavy mahogany doors behind them. Outside, the police megaphones were already starting to blare, demanding the release of Lily Whitmore.
"We have to run," Alexander said, checking the ammunition in his tactical pistol. "The service tunnels are still compromised, but we can take the helicopter from the north ridge."
"The helicopter won't clear federal airspace, Alexander," Eleanor said, sitting down in her chair, looking suddenly very old. "Thomas controls the regulatory agencies. He’s spent forty years preparing for this day."
Claire knelt in front of her mother. "Then what do we do? We can't just hand Lily over to a monster!"
Eleanor looked down at the red and blue baby shoes sitting side by side on the table. A strange, definitive peace settled over the matriarch's face.
"Thomas wants the voting shares," Eleanor said softly. "But he forgot one detail. The shadow trust requires a unanimous verification from two living generations of Whitmore women. He has you, Claire. But he doesn't have me. And he never will."
Before Alexander or Claire could stop her, Eleanor stood up and walked toward the small built-in wall safe behind the family portrait. She pulled out a small, amber glass vial—something she had kept hidden for thirty years.
"Mother, no!" Alexander yelled, realizing what she was about to do.

"If I am gone, the trust enters a legal deadlock for twelve months," Eleanor said, her hand steady as she uncorked the vial. "Twelve months for you to fight him in the courts. Twelve months to keep Lily safe. Tell her... tell her grandmother loved her enough to clear the wallpaper."
With a swift, unbroken movement, Eleanor swallowed the contents of the vial. Within seconds, her eyes widened, her body going completely rigid before she collapsed into Alexander’s arms.
