CHAPTER 27 — THE HEIST OF THE INNOCENT

The state-monitored facility in Westchester was an old brick estate surrounded by high concrete walls and private security guards paid for by the state—but secretly selected by Thomas Whitmore.

At 2:00 AM, the facility’s main transformer exploded, cutting off the perimeter alarms and plunging the buildings into darkness.

Alexander dropped from the perimeter wall, dressed in black tactical gear, followed closely by Anna Carter. They moved through the shadows with military precision, bypassing the blinded security cameras.

Inside the residential wing, Lily sat on her small bed, clutching the single red baby shoe she had managed to keep hidden in her pillowcase. She wasn't crying. She was waiting.

The door to her room clicked open.

"Uncle Alex?" she whispered into the dark.

"Shh, sweetie," Alexander said, lifting her gently into his arms. "We’re going home."

As they reached the back exit, a searchlight cut through the dark courtyard, catching them in its beam. A voice boomed over the intercom.

"Drop the child, Mr. Whitmore. You are surrounded."

Standing at the edge of the courtyard was Thomas Whitmore, surrounded by ten heavily armed private mercenaries. But Thomas wasn't looking at Alexander. He was looking at the figure who had just stepped out from the shadows behind him, a suppressed pistol pressed firmly against the back of his neck.

It was Claire.

"Tell your men to lower their weapons, Uncle," Claire said, her voice completely devoid of fear. "Or I will find out if a ghost can bleed twice."
