Chapter 2

PART 2 — THE SHOES
Lily stepped forward immediately.
“Please.”
Victoria ignored her.
She opened the lid in front of everyone.
Inside the white box was a pair of tiny red baby shoes.
Soft leather.
Worn at the sole.
Beautiful in the way only very old things become beautiful when they have been loved long enough.
Victoria’s expression changed the moment she saw them.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That was what frightened Lily most.
Victoria turned too quickly and walked toward the small trash bin near the end of the table.
Lily’s voice trembled.
“Please don’t throw them away.”
Victoria dropped the tiny shoes into the trash.
The sound they made was almost nothing.
But it was enough.
Because from the head of the room, Eleanor Whitmore looked up.
Eleanor had been seated quietly through the dinner, saying little, watching everything.
She was the family matriarch.
The one person in the mansion whose silence was often more powerful than other people’s anger.
She turned her head toward the trash bin.
Saw the red baby shoes.
And slowly stood up.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
“Take them out,” she said.
Victoria froze.
Alexander Whitmore—her fiancé—stepped nearer, confused by the change in his mother’s face.
Eleanor walked to the bin herself.
Then, with one steady hand, she lifted a tiny red shoe from the top of the trash.
For a moment, she only stared at it.
When she finally spoke, her voice was low.
“Why does this child have my daughter’s baby shoes?”
Victoria went pale.

And Lily, who did not understand the question, suddenly realized the shoes mattered more than anyone had ever told her.
