Chapter 23

CHAPTER 23 — LIQUIDITY ZERO
By 2:00 PM, the financial empire of the Whitmore family was bleeding out. Inside the high-security boardroom of Whitmore Enterprises, a panel of terrified financial analysts sat before Alexander and Eleanor.
"Every offshore trust, every domestic checking account, even the foundation’s emergency reserves—they’ve all been flagged by the Treasury Department under a suspected terrorist financing match," the chief financial officer explained, his hands sweating. "We can't even pay our private security staff, Mr. Whitmore. By tomorrow morning, our credit lines will be entirely canceled."
Alexander slammed his fist onto the glass table. "How can a ghost freeze federal banking assets?!"
"Because the ghost isn't a criminal to the banks," Eleanor said, her voice eerily calm as she sat at the head of the table, holding the blue leather shoe in her lap. "To the world’s banking elite, he is the rightful owner of the Whitmore legacy."
She looked at Alexander, the secrets of her past finally tearing through her skin.
"When your father died thirty years ago, he didn't leave the empire to me, Alexander. He split the voting shares fifty-fifty between Arthur and a shadow trust. I spent thirty years lying to the board, pretending the shadow trust was mine. But it wasn't. The trust belongs to the Vanguard Group's true founder—the man your father owed his life to."
Claire walked into the boardroom, her face pale, holding a tablet showing a secure live feed of Lily’s school. "The school is locked down, but the local police just showed up with a federal court order. They’re claiming Anna Carter kidnapped Lily."

"What?!" Alexander roared.
"The paperwork is flawless," Claire choked out. "The legal guardian listed on the federal warrant isn't me, and it isn't you, Mother. It’s a corporate entity called The Phoenix Birthright Trust. And the man who just signed for the custody transfer at the precinct... is standing right outside our gates."
