Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5 — THE WEIGHT OF THE REBORN
The second-floor guest room felt less like a sanctuary and more like a museum of a life Lily had never known. The towering high ceilings and heavy velvet drapes, smelling faintly of jasmine and old money, seemed to dwarf her tiny frame. On the nightstand, the red baby shoes seemed to glow under the soft lamplight, cast in sharp relief against the polished mahogany.
Lily pulled the silk duvet tighter around her shoulders, her small fingers tracing the intricate embroidery. Everything here was too clean, too quiet. "Is my mommy coming back too?" she whispered to the empty room.
Before the silence could answer, the heavy oak door swung open with a muted thud. Alexander stepped in, his expensive silk tie completely undone, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his cheek twitched like a trapped wire. The polished, effortless billionaire who had commanded the dinner party just hours ago was entirely gone. In his place stood a man realizing his entire reality had been a meticulously curated lie.
"The Lane family lawyers are already on the phone, Mother," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a harsh, strained whisper so as to not scare the child. "Victoria’s father is threatening a multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit if we don't issue an immediate public retraction about the engagement cancelation. They’re claiming extortion."
Eleanor Whitmore didn't even flinch. She stood by the grand bay window, her silhouette rigid and dark against the moonlit grounds below. The elegant facade of the family matriarch hadn't broken, but the air around her crackled with a new, dangerous energy.

"Let them sue," Eleanor murmured, turning slowly. Her gaze shifted from the window to the small white box resting on the table. "Tell Richard Lane that if he breathes a single word to the press, I will personally hand the forensic audits of the foundation to the FBI before sunrise. The Lanes wanted our legacy. Instead, they are going to get a federal indictment."
She walked toward the bed, her heels clicking rhythmically, a fierce, protective warmth briefly crossing her cold eyes as she looked at Lily. "Sleep now, little one. Tomorrow, the world changes, and nobody will ever make you hide in the hallways again."
