Chapter 21

CHAPTER 21 — THE BLUE SHOE
The air inside the grand hallway turned ice-cold the moment Claire stepped back inside. The car carrying Lily to her first day of school had just departed, but a sudden intuition—the kind developed over eight years of looking over her shoulder—forced Claire back to the mahogany side table.
Her eyes locked onto the black velvet envelope resting beside the original white box.
With trembling fingers, Claire opened it. The tiny, freshly stitched blue leather baby shoe fell into her palm. It was identical in craftsmanship to the red ones, but the scent of the leather was agonizingly new.
“For the second daughter. Every generation has its price.”
"Mother!" Claire’s scream shattered the morning quiet of the mansion.
Eleanor and Alexander rushed in from the courtyard, their expressions shifting from calm to immediate alarm at the sight of the blue shoe. Eleanor grabbed the handwritten note, her face draining of what little color it had.
"This is impossible," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "My mother only made two pairs. The red ones for the first-born daughters... and a blue pair for the child who was supposed to die."
Alexander’s phone buzzed aggressively in his pocket. He pulled it out, his face hardening as he read a high-priority alert from the Whitmore corporate security division.

"The firewall on the main server just didn't collapse, Mother," Alexander said, his voice taut with panic. "It was bypassed using a secondary master encryption key. A key registered to an account that hasn't been active since 1996. The name on the account is Arthur’s... but the biometric authorization just came from inside a private bank in Zurich."
Claire grabbed her brother’s arm, her nails digging into his skin. "They have a camera on Lily’s school, Alexander! I saw it on the laptop. Julian Vance wasn't the top of the pyramid. Whoever sent this blue shoe is already watching my daughter right now!"
