CHAPTER 31 — THE ARCHITECT OF GHOSTS

The smoke inside the bunker smelled of ozone, burnt leather, and old blood. In the sudden, ringing silence following the gunshot, Alexander kept his rifle raised, his laser sight painting the chest of the woman standing in the doorway.

She looked seventy, perhaps older, but she stood with the spine of a military general. Her face was a terrifying mirror of Eleanor’s, but colder, hardened by decades in a shadows-only world.

This was Victoria Whitmore—Eleanor’s mother. The matriarch before the matriarch. The woman the family history books claimed had died of tuberculosis in a Swiss clinic forty years ago.

"Lower the weapon, Alexander," Victoria said, her voice a gravelly, aristocratic purr that effortlessly commanded the room. "If I wanted you dead, my commandos wouldn't have just neutralized Thomas’s tracking team in the airspace above us."

Claire stepped out from behind Alexander, her eyes locked onto the fresh blue leather shoe in the old woman’s hand. "You're alive. You faked your death. Just like Thomas. Just like Arthur." Claire let out a bitter, breathless laugh.

"What is wrong with this family? Is anyone actually buried in the Whitmore plot, or is that cemetery just a storage unit for your lies?"

Victoria Whitmore walked over to the metal table, ignoring the rifle still aimed at her chest, and set the blue shoe down next to the shattered remains of the red one.

"The cemetery is for the weak, Claire," Victoria said coldly. "Your father, your uncle Arthur, Thomas... they were boys playing with a toy kingdom. They thought the Vanguard Group was a laundering system. They didn't understand that Vanguard was built to survive the collapse of the Western banking system. And right now, Thomas is about to hand the keys to the federal government out of pure, childish spite."

Lily peeked out from behind Anna’s legs, staring at the old woman. "Are you another bad person?"

Victoria looked down at the child. For a fraction of a second, her frozen expression softened. "I am the person who made sure you were born, little one. Now, pack your things. Thomas’s ground forces are ten minutes away, and the United States government is about to declare this entire mountain range a restricted military zone."
