CHAPTER 11 — THE SHADOW IN THE HALLWAY

The echo of the suppressed gunshot felt like a physical blow in the pitch-black room. For two agonizing seconds, the only sound was the howling wind and the frantic, shallow breathing of four trapped people.

Then came the heavy thud of a body hitting the hardwood floor.

"Alexander!" Eleanor screamed, dropping her matriarchal armor entirely. "Claire! Lily!"

"I’m here, Mother," Alexander’s voice strained through the dark, closer to the floor. He had tackled Claire and Lily onto the plush Persian rug the exact second the flash of lightning blinded the room. "I’m hit, but it’s just my shoulder. Where is Arthur?"

Another flash of lightning illuminated the doorway. Arthur Whitmore was no longer looking at them. He was staggering backward, his gun hand bleeding heavily. Standing in the doorway, framed by the blue electricity of the storm, was a silhouette holding a smoking tactical pistol.

The figure stepped into the room, flicking on a high-powered flashlight. The beam cut through the darkness, revealing a face covered in rain and sweat.

It was Richard Lane—Victoria’s father.

"You dynamic piece of trash," Richard hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. He kept his gun trained on Arthur, who was clutching his shattered wrist on the floor. "You told me Claire was taken care of. You told me my daughter would marry into the Whitmore fortune, and we’d finally liquidate the offshore accounts. You didn't tell me you were going to murder my daughter's fiancé!"

Arthur let out a low, bloody chuckle, leaning his back against the wall.

"You always were a small-minded bureaucrat, Richard," Arthur spat, coughing up blood. "Did you really think I’d share a billion-dollar empire with a second-rate accountant? You and Victoria were nothing but human shields. If the FBI came knocking, your signatures were on the laundering manifests, not mine."

From the floor, Claire pulled Lily tighter against her chest, her eyes wide as she looked between her undead uncle and the man who had helped lock her away for eight years.

"You both built a cage out of my life," Claire whispered, her voice rising above the thunder.

Richard didn't look at her. His eyes were wild, darting around the dark room. "It’s over. The police are already on their way. I called them myself when I realized Arthur’s men had cut the power grid. I’m cutting a deal, Eleanor!" he shouted into the dark toward the matriarch. "I'll give the feds Arthur. I'll give them everything. Just keep Victoria out of a cell!"

Before Eleanor could answer, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the floor below. Arthur’s hired mercenaries weren't done. And they weren't here to arrest anyone.
