Chapter 6 - The Empty Townhouse

|

Graham slammed the heavy oak door of our Gold Coast townhouse, the sound echoing violently through the three-story foyer.

“Avery!” he roared, his voice bouncing off the Venetian plaster walls. “Avery, get out here right now!”

Silence answered him.

Tessa trailed behind him, her red satin dress looking entirely out of place in the cold, cavernous entryway. She nervously clutched her designer purse, her polished demeanor completely shattered by the evening's events.

“Graham, maybe we shouldn't be here,” Tessa whispered, glancing at the shadows of the unlit house. “If she’s acting this crazy, she might have called the police.”

“She didn't call the police,” Graham snapped, loosening his tie with frantic, jerky movements. “She’s throwing a hormonal tantrum. She’s upstairs crying in the master bedroom. I know how to handle her.”

He marched up the sweeping grand staircase, taking the steps two at a time. He threw open the double doors to our bedroom.

It was perfectly, immaculately empty.

The bed was made. The pillows were perfectly aligned. Graham stormed into the massive walk-in closet, ready to yell, but the words died in his throat.

My side of the closet was bare. Every dress, every pair of shoes, every handbag was gone. The jewelry safe stood open, completely hollowed out. Even the ultrasound photos I had kept pinned to the vanity mirror had been removed.

“She took her things,” Tessa said from the doorway, her voice trembling slightly. “Graham... she actually left.”

“She can't leave!” Graham screamed, sweeping a crystal perfume bottle off the vanity. It shattered against the hardwood floor. “She owns fifty-one percent of the holding company! She’s trying to scare me. She wants me to beg.”
