Chapter 16 - The Hostile Takeover

Graham stared at the pen resting on top of the manila folder. His hands trembled violently, the metal of his handcuffs rattling against the steel table.
He looked up at my face, searching for a trace of the woman who used to make him coffee every morning. He looked for the wife who had spent eleven years supporting his massive, fragile ego.
He found absolutely nothing but ice.
“You planned this from the start,” Graham choked out, a bitter, broken laugh escaping his lips. “You knew about Tessa. You knew about the Caymans. You waited until the gala to maximize the damage. You used the baby as a shield to make me underestimate you.”
“I didn't use my child, Graham,” I corrected him sharply, placing a protective hand over my stomach. “I protected my child from a man who viewed us as disposable assets.”
“I loved you, Avery,” he whispered, a final, desperate attempt to manipulate my emotions.
“You loved my money,” I replied coldly. “Sign the papers.”
He picked up the pen. His hand shook so badly he could barely form the letters, but he scrawled his signature across the divorce decree, the relinquishment of parental rights, and the corporate transfer. With four strokes of a pen, he erased his entire existence from my life and my empire.
I pulled the folder back across the table, securing the documents in my leather bag. I stood up, smoothing the front of my black blazer.
“I’ll have Silas send the ledgers to your attorney this afternoon,” I said, turning away from the table.

“Avery!” he called out as I reached the heavy steel door. “What are you going to tell him? When he grows up. What are you going to tell our son about his father?”
I looked over my shoulder, my expression entirely unreadable. “I will tell him his father was a lesson. One I learned well.”
