Chapter 19 - The New Empire

|

Six months later, the Chicago winter had melted into a bright, promising spring.

Vanguard Holdings had just posted its highest quarterly profits in a decade. I was sitting at the head of the boardroom table, Julian strapped securely into a designer baby carrier on my chest, quietly sleeping through the financial presentation.

The board members, including Arthur Pendelton, didn't bat an eye at the baby's presence. They knew better than to question my methods. I was sharper, more ruthless, and far more successful than Graham had ever been.

Tessa Ward was currently working as a shift manager at a mid-tier retail store in the suburbs, her corporate career permanently destroyed by the scandal. Graham had officially accepted the plea deal. He was serving seven years in a medium-security federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania, completely stripped of his wealth, his reputation, and his son.

“The acquisition of the tech firm in Silicon Valley is finalized, Avery,” Silas said, closing his folder. “The market reacted exactly as you predicted.”

“Excellent,” I murmured, gently patting Julian’s back as he stirred in his sleep. “Let’s draft the press release for tomorrow morning. Meeting adjourned.”

I walked back to my sprawling corner office. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the city I now entirely controlled. I had won the war. I had protected my child, destroyed my enemies, and secured an absolute monopoly on my own future.

I gently unstrapped Julian and laid him in the antique wooden crib Marcus had installed in the corner of my office. I watched my son sleep, his chest rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm. Everything was perfect. The empire was secure.

But as I turned to sit at my desk, I noticed something entirely out of place resting on my pristine leather blotter.

It was a small, unmarked black envelope.
