Chapter 3 - The Corporate Treason

The answer had finally arrived at 9:17 p.m. Tessa Ward had been standing near the main stage in a stunning red satin dress, with one hand resting on Graham’s arm.
Too comfortably. Too publicly for a simple employee.
She was twenty-nine, undeniably beautiful, flawlessly polished, and the director of corporate communications at Cole Meridian Holdings. Technically, she worked for me too. Or, at least, she had, until she decided my husband was a better ladder to climb.
I had suspected the affair for months, but the corporate treason was what truly broke my heart. Tessa was the one drafting the press releases about my "stepping back." Tessa was the one filtering my emails, ensuring Graham’s narrative of my mental fragility was the only story the public heard.
“Avery, you’re causing a scene,” Graham hissed, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper as he stepped away from Tessa. “Pick up the ring. Now.”
“I think it looks better in her glass, Graham,” I replied smoothly, adjusting the diamond bracelet on my wrist. “It matches her ambition.”
Tessa’s face flushed a deep, humiliating crimson. “Mrs. Cole, I assure you, this is a misunderstanding. Graham and I were just discussing the merger—”
“Do not insult my intelligence, Tessa,” I interrupted, my voice perfectly level. “You were kissing my husband’s neck in front of the Wall Street Journal. The only thing merging tonight is your career and the pavement.”
Graham grabbed my elbow, his grip tight enough to bruise. “I told you not to make this ugly. You are going to ruin the lender negotiations. You are hysterical.”
“Take your hand off me,” I warned, my smile never wavering.

He didn't move. He tried to stare me down, using the same intimidation tactics that worked on rival CEOs.
“I said, let go,” I repeated, my tone turning to absolute ice. “Before the photographers realize exactly what is happening here.”
