Chapter 18 - The Birth of an Heir

|

The delivery room was a sanctuary of controlled chaos.

For nine agonizing hours, I fought through the pain. I didn't scream, channeling every ounce of the fierce, unyielding determination that had built my company into bringing my child into the world.

Silas paced the waiting room outside, acting as the designated family member, ensuring the hospital security kept the paparazzi entirely contained.

“One more push, Avery!” Dr. Evans encouraged, her voice a calm anchor in the storm of exhaustion. “You’re almost there. Give me everything you have left.”

I gripped the rails of the hospital bed, closing my eyes, and pushed with a guttural, primal cry.

Suddenly, the intense pressure vanished. The room fell silent for a fraction of a second, followed immediately by the strong, piercing wail of a newborn.

I collapsed back against the pillows, tears of pure, unadulterated relief streaming down my face. My chest heaved as I desperately tried to catch my breath.

“He is perfect, Avery,” Dr. Evans smiled, quickly wiping the baby down before placing a warm, wriggling weight onto my bare chest.

I looked down at my son. He had a shock of dark hair and furious, squeezed-shut eyes. I wrapped my arms around his fragile, tiny body, pressing my lips to his forehead. He smelled like pure magic.

“Welcome to the world, Julian,” I whispered, entirely consumed by a fierce, terrifying love.

I looked around the sterile delivery room. Graham wasn't there to cut the cord. He wasn't there to take photos or hand out cigars to the board members. He was sitting in a federal prison cell, waiting for his sentencing hearing.

But as Julian opened his dark eyes and looked up at me, the absence of his father didn't feel like a tragedy. It felt like the greatest victory of my entire life. He was entirely mine, and he was completely safe.
