Chapter 14 - The Falling King

|

The absolute destruction of Graham Cole was swift and entirely merciless.

Within forty-eight hours of his arrest, his few remaining allies in the corporate world publicly abandoned him. The lenders issued immediate statements distancing themselves from his tenure. The board of directors wiped his image from the company website, erasing his legacy as if he had never existed.

He was denied bail. The judge deemed him an extreme flight risk, given the millions of dollars still unaccounted for in offshore dummy corporations.

Graham spent his nights in a cold, sterile holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. He wore a scratchy orange jumpsuit instead of his bespoke Italian suits. He ate terrible food. He slept on a thin, uncomfortable mattress.

But the worst part of his imprisonment wasn't the physical discomfort. It was the crushing realization of his own profound stupidity.

He sat on the edge of his metal cot, staring at the concrete wall, replaying the last eleven years of our marriage. He had always thought he was the smartest person in the room. He thought I was just a quiet, obedient wife who was lucky to ride his coattails to billions.

He finally understood the truth. I hadn't been standing behind him because I was weak. I had been standing behind him because it gave me a perfect view of all his blind spots. I had let him play the king while I quietly controlled the entire board.

When he tried to push me out, he hadn't just kicked a sleeping bear; he had walked into a meticulously designed slaughterhouse.

A guard banged a nightstick against the metal bars of his cell, jarring him out of his spiraling thoughts.

“Cole,” the guard grunted. “You have a visitor. Your lawyer says it’s urgent.”

Graham stood up, a desperate flicker of hope igniting in his chest. Maybe they had found a loophole.
