Chapter 20 - The Unfinished Business

I stared at the black envelope, a cold spike of adrenaline piercing through my absolute calm.
Marcus screened everything that came onto this floor. Security protocols were airtight. No one, not even the board members, could place an object on my desk without clearance. Yet, here it was, stark and terrifying against the dark mahogany.
I didn't call for Marcus right away. I pulled a silver letter opener from my drawer, my hand perfectly steady. I sliced the top of the heavy cardstock, pulling out a single, unlined piece of white paper.
There was no signature. No return address. Just one sentence written in elegant, looping cursive.
You took his empire, Avery, but you forgot about his debts.
My breath hitched.
I looked down into the envelope. At the very bottom, wrapped in a small piece of tissue paper, was a heavy, silver coin completely covered in a dark, rusted substance that looked horrifyingly like dried blood. It bore the insignia of a private, violently dangerous Russian syndicate that Graham had sworn to me he had stopped dealing with five years ago.
If Graham had borrowed money from them during his frantic attempt to save his Caymans account... if he had leveraged the company's hidden assets before I froze them... the federal government wasn't my biggest problem.
My private desk phone suddenly began to ring. The caller ID flashed a terrifying, impossible phrase: RESTRICTED OVERRIDE.
I looked at Julian, sleeping peacefully in his crib, completely unaware that the war I thought I had won was merely a prelude. I walked slowly toward the phone, picking up the receiver, the heavy silver coin burning a hole in my palm.
“Hello?” I answered, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
May you like
A low, heavily accented voice chuckled on the other end of the line.
“Mrs. Cole,” the voice purred. “We need to talk about your husband’s balance.”
