Chapter 17 - The Contractions

The takeover was complete. The board approved the massive restructuring the following week, officially crowning me the undisputed ruler of the newly rebranded Vanguard Holdings.
I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant when the final legal hurdles were cleared. I was sitting in my penthouse office, signing off on the severance packages for the executives who had aided Graham's attempted coup, when the first sharp pain ripped through my lower abdomen.
I dropped my gold fountain pen on the desk, gasping as a wave of intense, agonizing pressure stole the breath from my lungs.
“Marcus!” I managed to call out, gripping the edge of the mahogany desk until my knuckles turned white.
The heavy oak doors burst open instantly. Marcus took one look at my pale, sweaty face and immediately tapped his earpiece.
“Bring the car around to the private garage now,” Marcus ordered, rushing to my side to support my weight. “Medical emergency. Protocol Alpha.”
“It’s too early,” I gasped, a second contraction hitting me so hard my knees buckled. “My water just broke.”
“We’re ten minutes from the private hospital wing,” Marcus assured me, easily lifting me into his arms. “You’re going to be fine, Mrs. Cole. Just breathe.”

The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing city lights, agonizing pain, and the frantic sound of my own harsh breathing. For months, I had been in absolute control of everything—the company, the board, my husband’s destruction. But right now, my body was entirely in charge, and the raw, primal fear was overwhelming.
I was rushed through the secret VIP entrance of the hospital on a gurney, surrounded by a team of nurses and Dr. Evans. The sterile smell of the hospital hit me, a sharp contrast to the rich leather and mahogany of my corporate life. The battle for the empire was over. The battle for my son had just begun.
