Chapter 7 - The Escape

|

Grant realized the severity of the situation. The color completely drained from his face as the financial implications crashed over him.

He lunged forward, ignoring the security guards, and followed me as I turned and walked into the grand corridor outside the ballroom.

"You can’t cancel the wire transfer, Claire!" Grant shouted, his voice cracking with panic. "The board of directors already approved the regional expansion based on that capital! Contracts have been signed!"

"Your board approved the expansion based on the fraudulent numbers you and your mother supplied to them," I replied without breaking stride.

"We’re married!" he argued, desperately grabbing my shoulder. "We said the vows! Your fund is our money now! You can't just take it back!"

That specific, greedy sentence rang out loudly in the marble hallway. It was captured perfectly, clearly, by Sarah’s phone, which she was holding discreetly at her side.

The video also captured Eleanor, who was scurrying behind us, hissing venomously at her son, "Just get her upstairs, Grant! Get her in the suite and make her calm down until the banks open on Monday!"

I stopped dead in my tracks and slowly turned to face them. I shrugged off Grant's hand as if it were a diseased insect.

"You clearly didn't read the paperwork you signed, Grant," I said, a cold, victorious smile spreading across my lips. "Our prenuptial agreement explicitly states that Northstar Capital and all its assets are my sole, separate property. The escrow agreement dictates that the capital remains entirely mine until the moment of release."

I took a step closer to him, letting the reality sink in.

"And your little cake performance in there?" I whispered. "It is now permanently attached to a federal litigation hold as evidence of coercion. You get absolutely nothing."

Grant’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked like a man who had just stepped off a cliff and realized there was no parachute.

I turned my back on them and walked away. I didn't go to the bridal suite. I walked straight out the front doors of the hotel, ruined dress and all, into the cool night air. The valet, eyes wide with shock, immediately brought my waiting SUV around.

Sarah slid into the passenger seat beside me.

"Drive," I told the chauffeur. "Get me as far away from this building as possible."
