Chapter 11 - The Audio Evidence

|
The night before the board meeting, I didn't sleep. I sat in the hotel suite with Mara and our lead forensic accountant, piecing together the final, undeniable proof of their crimes.
The fake $3.2 million shell company, supposedly a prestigious "brand consulting firm," had been meticulously traced by my team. It didn't exist in any commercial registry. The physical address listed on the invoices didn't belong to an office building. It traced directly to Kyle’s luxury high-rise apartment downtown.
But the shell company wasn't the most damaging thing we possessed.
"We finished processing the data dump from the Vance internal servers that we secured under the litigation hold," Mara announced, walking into the room with a secure hard drive. "You were right, Claire. They got sloppy. They didn't think you would ever audit the executive communication logs."
"What did you find?" I asked, leaning forward.
Mara plugged the drive into her laptop and clicked a file.
"It's an automated recording from the conference room phone system. They used it for a board call, but they forgot to turn off the recording feature after the other directors hung up. It’s just Grant and Eleanor speaking privately."
She hit play. The audio quality was slightly muffled, but the voices were unmistakable.
“The bridge money has to pass through the consulting shell first, Mom,” Grant's voice echoed from the laptop speakers. “Kyle has the offshore routing numbers ready. Once Claire’s money clears escrow, we move the first three million before her people start asking annoying questions.”
There was a pause, then Eleanor’s aristocratic, cold voice replied.
“Are you absolutely certain she won't notice the diversion? She's sharper than she looks.”
“She’s blinded by the wedding,” Grant scoffed arrogantly. “After we say the vows, she won’t risk the public humiliation of leaving me. She’s obsessed with her perfect image. She’ll fund whatever fake invoice I put in front of her just to keep the peace.”
“Good,” Eleanor murmured. “And if she hesitates, just remind her what family loyalty looks like. Break her down early.”

I stared at the laptop, a cold, hard anger solidifying in my chest. They hadn't just planned to steal from me; they had actively plotted to emotionally abuse me into submission.
"Burn this audio to a drive, Mara," I said softly. "Tomorrow, we burn them to the ground."
