Chapter 6 - The Missing Millions

|

Eleanor’s fake, maternal smile instantly vanished, replaced by a sneer of pure venom.

"You are making a colossal mistake, you hysterical little girl," Eleanor whispered so only I could hear. "You signed a contract."

"And you violated the terms," I fired back.

The eighteen-million-dollar Northstar investment had never been a wedding gift, despite what Grant liked to imply to his country club friends. It was a highly conditional, heavily regulated rescue package for Vance Hospitality. The once-respected regional hotel chain was secretly drowning in massive, unmanageable debt.

Release of the funds from my escrow account required three things: perfectly accurate financial disclosures, no material misrepresentation of assets, and my final, personal authorization signature.

Clause Twelve of our contract allowed for immediate, total withdrawal of the rescue package if management concealed liabilities or acted dishonestly during the due diligence phase.

"You have no grounds to activate Clause Twelve," Grant argued, stepping around a security guard. "Our books are clean."

"Are they?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

Just three days earlier, Mara and my forensic accounting team had found a massive anomaly. A $3.2 million obligation was completely missing from the disclosure schedule they had submitted. When I casually asked Grant about it, he brushed it off, calling it a minor "accounting oversight" that would be fixed after the honeymoon.

That very morning, while getting my hair done, my team had uncovered the truth.

The supposed creditor for that $3.2 million wasn't a bank. It was a ghost shell company completely controlled by Kyle, the best man. The bridge money from Northstar was scheduled to pass through Vance Hospitality, bounce into that shell company for fake "brand consulting fees," and then, according to the digital trail, funnel directly into hidden offshore accounts controlled solely by Grant and Eleanor.

They weren't just using me to save the company. They were actively embezzling my money to enrich themselves.

I hadn't confronted them before the ceremony because I desperately needed time to ensure the original, unaltered server files were preserved under a legal litigation hold before they could hit delete.

I needed a reason to pull the plug publicly. Their arrogance with the wedding cake had just handed me the perfect, undeniable excuse on a silver platter.
