Chapter 16 - The Swift Severance

|
Our marriage had officially lasted less than twenty-four hours.
The legal divorce, however, dragged on for six agonizing months, mostly due to Grant’s desperate, pathetic attempts to claim a portion of my wealth to pay off his massive criminal restitution debts.
He hired a bottom-feeding lawyer who tried to argue that because we had legally signed the marriage license before the reception, he was entitled to spousal support and half of the Northstar Capital assets. He claimed he had "become accustomed to a certain lifestyle" during our two-year courtship.
My legal team absolutely decimated him in family court.
The prenuptial agreement I had insisted upon—the one he had laughingly signed, believing he would eventually manipulate me into voiding it—held up perfectly under the judge's scrutiny.
The judge, who had clearly seen the viral video of the cake incident, had absolutely zero sympathy for a convicted fraudster attempting to extort his abused bride.
"The terms of the prenuptial agreement are explicitly clear and entirely enforceable," the judge ruled, slamming her gavel down with finality. "Mr. Vance is entitled to nothing."
Grant received exactly what he deserved. None of Northstar Capital. None of the proceeds from the sale of Morgan Sentinel. And absolutely none of the lavish, billionaire future he had arrogantly planned to purchase using my trust.

When the final divorce decree was signed, I walked out of the courthouse feeling a profound, overwhelming sense of lightness. I had walked straight into a nightmare, but I had fought my way out with my dignity, my wealth, and my sanity entirely intact.
I didn't celebrate. I simply went back to my office, poured a cup of coffee, and got back to work. There were empires to build, and I was finally free to build them solely for myself.
