Chapter 37 - A Bitter Victory | Two days later, the dust began to settle.

Vance Global’s stock rebounded to an all-time high as news broke that I had personally dismantled a massive corporate conspiracy. I was hailed as an untouchable titan of industry—a ruthless genius who couldn't be killed.
I stood in my private office, looking at a framed picture of myself and Mara from three years ago, back when we were just ambitious young women working out of a tiny cubicle.
There was a soft knock on the door.
Marcus walked in, carrying his shoulder in a heavy black sling. He had survived the shootout at the bunker with a minor bullet wound.
"The federal authorities have officially closed the investigation into Aegis Protocol's domestic operations," Marcus reported. "Their network in the US has been dismantled."
"And Richard Vance?" I asked, keeping my back to him.
"He suffered a massive stroke during his arrest at the estate," Marcus said quietly. "He’s in a state prison hospital. He can't speak, move, or recognize anyone. He’s a shell."
I stared at the photograph in my hand for a long moment, then slowly turned it face down on my desk.
"Did we win, Marcus?" I asked softly, the cold armor I had worn for months finally showing a hairline crack.

Marcus looked at me with sad, tired eyes. "You kept the company, Claire. You kept your life. But look around this room. Look at what it cost."
He was right. I was sitting alone in a fortress of glass and steel, surrounded by enemies disguised as allies, having sacrificed my humanity just to stay alive.
