Chapter 30 - The Ultimate Betrayal | "Why?" I choked out, feeling as though I had been stabbed in the chest. "I trusted you with everything! I gave you a seat at my table! You were my sister in all of this!"

"Your table?" Mara laughed bitterly, a single tear escaping down her cheek. "I worked just as hard as you did to bring down the Vances! I bled for that company! But when the dust settled, who got the CEO title? Who got their picture on the cover of Forbes? Who got all the glory while I stayed the quiet assistant in the background?"

"I offered you a seat on the board!" I yelled, anger rising through the grief.

"I don't want a seat, Claire! I want the throne!" she snapped. "Do you have any idea how much Aegis Protocol offered me to sell out your private schedules? Enough money to buy my own empire."

"They're mercenaries, Mara," Marcus warned, his gun still pointed at her chest. "The second you open that door, they will kill you too. You're a liability to them."

"No," Mara said, shaking her head frantically. "I have a contract. I get fifty percent of the buyout stock once Claire is out of the picture and the board panics."

"You naive fool," I said softly, looking at the woman I thought was my best friend. "You really think corporate killers leave living witnesses?"
