Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Coup

|

At two o'clock that afternoon, I walked into the top-floor boardroom of Caldwell Logistics Headquarters downtown.

I was wearing a tailored navy suit, my hair pulled back neatly, carrying the master portfolio of the Vance Trust. Beside me walked Evelyn and two senior auditors from the federal bankruptcy court.

The room was filled with the company’s executive board members, all sitting in tense silence. At the head of the table sat Nathan, wearing a hastily pressed suit, his eyes bloodshot and dark circles carved beneath them. Margaret was sitting in a chair against the back wall, holding a tissue.

When I stepped inside, Nathan stood up quickly. “Rebecca, you shouldn't be here. This is a private corporate meeting.”

“It was a private corporate meeting,” I corrected him, taking my seat at the far end of the table. “Until thirty minutes ago, when the trust exercised its voting rights under the default clause.”

Evelyn opened her leather briefcase and handed a stack of certified court documents to the board secretary.

“As of 1:30 PM today,” Evelyn announced to the room, “the Vance Trust holds seventy-two percent of the voting shares in Caldwell Logistics due to non-payment of the accelerated debt. Mr. Nathan Caldwell’s position as Chief Executive Officer is officially terminated.”

A collective gasp rippled across the boardroom table.

Nathan gripped the edge of the mahogany table until his knuckles turned white. “You can't fire me! I built this company!”

“With my grandfather’s money, my legal backing, and my quiet management behind the scenes,” I said, looking straight into his panicked eyes. “You were just the face of the company, Nathan. And frankly, the face of this company has become a major liability.”
