Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Legacy

|

Three days later, the news hit the regional business outlets.

“CALDWELL LOGISTICS CEO OUSTED AMID FRAUD INVESTIGATION AND DOMESTIC SCANDAL.”

The article included leaked stills from the security footage—specifically the moment Nathan threw the deed into the fire. The public reaction was swift and merciless. Social media blew up with comments condemning the Caldwell family, and within twenty-four hours, Jenna’s social media accounts were flooded with thousands of critical messages, forcing her to delete all her profiles.

I spent the afternoon at my grandfather’s grave site in the hills outside the city, placing fresh yellow roses beside his headstone.

“You were right, Grandpa,” I whispered, resting my hand on the smooth granite. “You told me real power isn't about shouting or making demands. It’s about holding the foundation when the storm hits.”

My phone rang. It was Evelyn.

“Rebecca, the tax audit just came back,” Evelyn reported, her tone sharp and precise. “Margaret Caldwell personally approved over two hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized company transfers to her personal account over the last eighteen months. The state prosecutor’s office wants to file formal charges.”

I watched the wind blow through the oak trees above the cemetery. “Let them file.”

“What about Nathan?” she asked.

“Nathan just signed his personal bankruptcy filing this morning,” Evelyn replied. “He’s living in a rented studio apartment on the south side of town. His car was repossessed two hours ago.”

“And the Caldwell name?” I asked softly.

“Completely erased from the company board,” Evelyn said. “As of this morning, the firm has been officially renamed Vance Global Logistics.”

I took a deep breath, feeling the crisp autumn air fill my lungs, and let out a long, peaceful sigh.
