Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Light

|
It was late autumn when I returned to my estate in Virginia.
The roses I had planted in the ceramic basin on my studio windowsill were in full bloom, their vibrant yellow petals catching the warm afternoon light filtering through the glass.
I stood in the center of my home, looking around at the quiet beauty I had built with my own hands, my own strength, and my grandfather’s unwavering legacy.
My phone rang on the desk. It was an encrypted international call from Julian.
“Good evening, Rebecca,” Julian’s warm voice resonated through the speaker. “I’m reviewing the final architectural blueprints for the new community center in Virginia. I wanted to make sure you approved of the open courtyard design before we finalize the plans.”
I walked over to the window, resting my hand on the smooth ceramic edge of the flower basin.
“I love the design, Julian,” I smiled, looking out over the golden autumn trees surrounding my property. “Keep it open to the light.”
“Always,” Julian replied softly.
I hung up the phone, taking a deep, satisfying breath of the clean autumn air.

Across the room, the old grandfather clock above the fireplace ticked away quietly, its carved pendulum swinging in a steady, peaceful rhythm. The hidden camera was gone, replaced by an open space filled with light.
I walked out onto my porch, stepping into the crisp afternoon breeze, knowing with absolute certainty that no matter what storms the world might bring, nobody would ever tell me to kneel again.
