Chapter 17 - The New Chapter

|

Spring arrived in full bloom, bringing bright green leaves to the oak trees surrounding my home.

I converted the former formal dining room—the room where the porcelain basin had once sat—into a bright, beautiful art studio. The heavy mahogany table was gone, replaced by wide wooden easels, canvases, and jars of vibrant oil paints.

I began hosting weekend art workshops for young women recovering from domestic hardship, offering them a safe space to express themselves, regain their confidence, and rebuild their lives.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, as I was helping a young woman blend colors on her canvas, my front gate opened, and a courier stepped up the walkway carrying a small wooden crate.

I walked out to the porch to meet him. “Can I help you?”

“Package for Ms. Rebecca Vance,” the courier said, checking his clipboard. “Requires a signature.”

I signed the slip, and the courier set the crate down on the porch bench before heading back to his truck.

I pulled out a small crowbar from my garden shed and carefully pried open the wooden lid. Inside, resting on a bed of soft straw, was a beautifully handcrafted ceramic basin, painted with delicate blue wildflowers and golden vines.

Resting inside the ceramic basin was a small, unsealed white card.
