Chapter 13 - The Second Chance

|

Six months passed.

Vance Global Logistics had recovered completely from the scandal. Under new management, our quarterly earnings were higher than they had ever been, and the toxic culture that Nathan had allowed to fester in the company was entirely swept away.

I had spent those six months rebuilding my life on my own terms. I redecorated the house, turning the dark, heavy dining room into a bright, airy space filled with plants, art, and natural light. The stone fireplace was still there, but the ashes of the blue folder were long gone, replaced by fresh birch wood that remained unlit.

One Friday evening, I hosted a small dinner party for my close friends, my legal team, and a few trusted colleagues.

There was no head of the table. No porcelain basins. No demands for deference. Just warm laughter, good food, and genuine conversation echoing through the bright rooms.

As I stood by the kitchen island pouring glass of wine for Evelyn, my doorbell rang softly.

Evelyn looked toward the front hall, her brow furrowing slightly. “Are you expecting anyone else tonight?”

“No,” I said, setting the wine bottle down. “Everyone should be here.”

I walked toward the foyer, looking through the frosted glass panel beside the grand oak door. Outside, standing under the porch light in the pouring rain, was a figure wrapped in a dark, worn jacket.

I opened the heavy oak door.

It was Nathan.
