Chapter 14 - Standing in the Rain

He looked unrecognizable.
The tailored designer suits were gone, replaced by a faded denim jacket and worn jeans. His hair was messy, unstyled, and soaked with rain. He was thinner, his cheekbones sharp, and the proud, arrogant tilt of his chin had been completely crushed out of him.
He stood on my porch, shivering slightly in the cold night air, holding a small brown paper envelope in his hands.
“Rebecca,” he said, his voice barely audible over the sound of the falling rain.
I stood inside the warm doorway, looking at him calmly, keeping my hands resting casually in the pockets of my cream-colored cardigan.
“What do you want, Nathan?” I asked, my tone completely devoid of emotion.
He looked down at his feet, swallowing hard. “I… I came to return something.”
He held out the brown paper envelope with a trembling hand. “I found this in my father’s old desk files at my sister’s place. It’s the original land survey map from when your grandfather first bought this property. I thought… I thought you should have it back.”
May you like
I looked at the envelope, then raised my eyes back to his face. “You drove across town in the rain just to give me a piece of paper?”
“No,” he whispered, tears welling in his eyes, mixing with the raindrops on his cheeks. “I came to tell you that… that I’m sorry. Truly, deeply sorry.”
