Chapter 11 - The Fall of Margaret

|

After the board meeting adjourned, the security team escorted Nathan and Margaret down to the lobby to clear out his office under supervision.

I walked down the hallway to the executive suite, watching as two movers packed Nathan’s personal items into cardboard boxes. Margaret sat on the leather sofa in the office reception area, weeping softly into her hands, all her former arrogance completely drained away.

When she saw me walk in, she looked up, her eyes wide with desperation.

“Rebecca,” she sobbed, reaching out toward me. “Please… I’m an old woman. Nathan was just trying to show his family that he was in control. He didn't mean to hurt you.”

I stopped in front of her, looking down at her with calm detachment.

“You sat at my table, Margaret,” I said quietly. “You watched your son demand that I kneel before you. You laughed and told me to apologize for wanting basic respect in my own home.”

“I was wrong!” she cried out. “I was foolish! But please, don't take everything from us! We have nowhere to go!”

“You have Jenna’s apartment,” I reminded her. “The one you bought using company expense funds—which, by the way, the auditors are currently reviewing for tax fraud.”

Margaret went completely rigid. “Tax fraud?”

“Every personal luxury expense you charged to Caldwell Logistics over the last three years is being audited,” I said smoothly. “Including your country club membership, your lease payments, and your private trips to Florida.”

Nathan walked out of his inner office carrying a single cardboard box filled with his framed diplomas and desk ornaments. He looked at his mother, then at me, looking completely broken.

“Is there anything left to take, Rebecca?” Nathan asked, his voice hollow.

“Just your pride, Nathan,” I said. “And it looks like you lost that all on your own.”
