Chapter 2 - The Boiling Point

|

For three long years, I had tried to keep the peace in this marriage.

I had smiled through Margaret's passive-aggressive insults at holiday dinners. I had pretended not to hear Jenna's snide comments about my background. I had stayed silent when Nathan told me I was “too sensitive” whenever his family crossed the line. I had convinced myself that marriage required sacrifice, that family meant compromise, and that eventually, my husband would realize protecting his mother's ego shouldn't mean destroying his wife's dignity.

Then Nathan looked me in the eye, pointed at the basin, and smiled like he owned my soul.

Something inside me went completely, utterly still.

I looked around that crowded dining table and realized I had spent three years begging for respect from people who had already decided I was beneath them.

I slowly stood up from my chair.

Margaret smiled triumphantly, adjusting her pearls. Nathan leaned back farther, crossing his arms. Jenna pointed her phone directly at my eyes, recording every single second.

I reached out and picked up the heavy porcelain basin with both hands.

Nathan laughed, thinking he had finally broken me. “That's a good girl.”

Then I tilted the basin and threw the dirty water directly into his face.

The impact made a sharp splash. The water soaked his styled hair, his tailored designer shirt, and the lapels of his jacket. Jenna screamed as water droplets sprayed across her phone screen. Chairs scraped violently against the hardwood floor as people jumped back.

Margaret bolted upright. “What is wrong with you, you crazy lunatic?!”

I set the heavy porcelain basin down on the table with a loud thud. Then I extended my arm and pointed straight toward the front foyer.

“All of you,” I said, my voice ice cold. “Get out of my house.”
