Chapter 16 - The Final Settlement

A year after the incident, the legal proceedings surrounding the Vance Trust and the Caldwell family came to an absolute close.
Margaret Caldwell reached a plea agreement with the state prosecutor regarding the corporate tax fraud charges. Due to her age and failing health, her prison sentence was suspended, replaced by three years of strict house arrest at Jenna’s small two-bedroom apartment, along with full financial restitution orders that wiped out her remaining savings.
Jenna was forced to sell her car and take a second job at a local retail store to help pay off her mother’s legal fees and back taxes. The Caldwell family’s social standing in the city was completely erased, replaced by the quiet, heavy reality of working-class survival.
Nathan secured a job as a mid-level logistics dispatcher at an independent trucking company on the outskirts of the state line. He worked long, twelve-hour night shifts, living quietly in his small apartment, far away from the high-society circles he had once tried so desperately to impress.

Evelyn slid the signed master folder into her filing cabinet and locked it with a key.
“That’s it, Rebecca,” Evelyn said with a warm smile, handing me a glass of champagne. “You are officially, completely, legally free.”

I raised my glass, watching the bubbles rise to the surface. “To clean slates.”
“To clean slates,” she echoed, clinking her glass against mine.
