Chapter 15 - The Anatomy of an Apology

Nathan took a shaky breath, wiping his wet face with his sleeve.
“I lost everything, Rebecca,” he choked out, his voice cracking. “My job, my money, my home… my dignity. But the worst part isn't any of that. The worst part is waking up every single morning in that empty room and realizing that I destroyed the only good thing I ever had in my life because I was too weak to stand up to my mother.”
I listened to him in silence, letting his words hang in the rain-filled air between us.
“I thought being a man meant making you submit to me,” he continued, looking up at me with raw, undisguised pain. “I thought if I made you look small in front of my family, it would make me look big. I was a coward, Rebecca. A arrogant, stupid coward.”
Inside the house, I could hear the soft sound of my friends laughing in the dining room, warm music playing softly in the background.
“Are you done?” I asked quietly.
Nathan blinked, startled by the calm coldness in my voice. “I… I know you’ll never forgive me. I don't even expect you to. I just wanted you to hear me say it without a lawyer present.”
“I appreciate the survey map, Nathan,” I said, taking the paper envelope from his trembling hand. “And I’m glad you finally understand what you did. But an apology doesn't rewrite three years of emotional cruelty.”
He looked down at the wet porch floor, bowing his head in total defeat. “I know.”

“Goodbye, Nathan.”
I stepped back and gently closed the heavy oak door, locking it with a soft click.
