Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

Nathan backed away from the marshals, his mind racing as he looked between me and the officers. “A lien? What are you talking about? My company is completely independent!”

“Your company,” I said calmly, stepping alongside the marshals, “was built on a three-million-dollar loan provided by my grandfather’s trust when we first got engaged. A loan that was conditional on your adherence to the prenuptial agreement you signed three years ago.”

Margaret’s eyes went wide. “Prenup? What prenup? You told me there was no prenup, Nathan!”

Nathan didn't answer his mother. Sweat was beginning to bead on his forehead, mixing with the water still dripping from his hair.

“Clause fourteen of that agreement,” I continued, reading directly from a document pulled up on my phone, “states that any intentional destruction of estate property, act of physical intimidation, or attempt to defraud the trust immediately triggers the full acceleration of the debt, payable within twenty-four hours.”

“Twenty-four hours?!” Nathan yelled, his voice cracking. “That’s impossible! I don't have three million dollars in liquid cash right now!”

“Then the trust takes control of Caldwell Logistics,” the second marshal stated plainly, pulling a legal notice from his briefcase and placing it on the dining table right next to the empty porcelain basin. “Effective immediately, your corporate accounts are frozen, and you are barred from entering the company premises.”

Jenna dropped her phone onto the carpet with a soft thud. “Nathan… what did you do?”

Nathan looked around the room at his family, who were suddenly pulling away from him as if he were contagious. The pride that had filled the room ten minutes ago had completely dissolved into sheer terror.
