Chapter 47

|

The next nine months were a whirlwind of joyous preparation, deeply contrasting the dark, isolating years of Emily’s first marriage. When she had lived in the grand Whitmore estate, everything was tightly controlled, sterile, and performative.

Now, her home with Nathan was filled with chaotic, wonderful life.

The spare bedroom was transformed into a nursery. There were no expensive interior designers hired to create a magazine-perfect room. Instead, Nathan spent his weekends covered in pale yellow paint, singing terribly to the radio while he built the crib. Rachel and Noah came over on Sundays, bringing boxes of gently used baby clothes and toys, filling the room with laughter and warmth.

Katherine, whose health had stabilized beautifully, sat in a comfortable armchair in the corner of the nursery, knitting a soft white blanket and offering unsolicited but highly appreciated advice on modern parenting.

"You know, Emily," Katherine noted one afternoon, watching Nathan struggle humorously to assemble a complex baby swing. "Your father would have hired a team of engineers to build that swing, and then yelled at them if it squeaked."

"I know, Mom," Emily smiled, resting her hands on her growing belly. "But I think I prefer Nathan's method. It comes with a lot more swearing, but significantly more love."

As her due date approached, the foundation staff threw her a massive, joyous baby shower in the communal kitchen of Clearview. Survivors, advocates, and lawyers gathered to celebrate the woman who had fought so fiercely to give them their lives back.

Chloe Croft, who was now working as a digital security advocate for the foundation, handed Emily a small, beautifully wrapped box.

"For the baby," Chloe smiled softly. "I know it’s not much, but I wanted her to have something from me."

Emily opened the box. Inside was a small, delicate silver compass.

"So she always knows how to find her way home," Chloe explained, her eyes shining with tears.

Emily pulled Chloe into a tight hug, overwhelmed by the profound, beautiful circle of healing they had created. She was bringing a daughter into a world filled with strong, resilient women who would protect her fiercely.
