Chapter 10

The morning sun poured through the large, arched windows of the Clearview headquarters, casting warm, golden rectangles across the hardwood floors of the communal kitchen. It had been three years since Emily transformed the darkest spaces of her former marriage into a sanctuary for others, and the building now hummed with a quiet, purposeful energy. She stood by the industrial coffee machine, watching as a group of survivors sat around a long wooden table, sharing breakfast and reviewing legal documents with a sense of calm that only came from safety.
Nathan walked into the kitchen, his tie loosened, carrying a thick stack of manila folders. He looked tired but deeply content, his eyes finding Emily immediately. He crossed the room and kissed her softly on the temple before setting the folders down on the counter.
"The expansion in Chicago is officially finalized," Nathan announced, his voice filled with quiet pride. "The lease for the new safe house was signed this morning, and the legal defense fund has been fully endowed for the next five years. You did it, Emily. Three cities."
"We did it," Emily corrected him gently, pouring him a cup of coffee and handing it to him. "I couldn't have navigated the zoning laws or the non-profit tax codes without you and Robert. It takes a village to undo the damage of men like Daniel."
Before Nathan could reply, the heavy wooden doors of the kitchen swung open. Rachel stepped in, her expression unusually tense. The relaxed, confident demeanor she usually carried as the director of survivor services was entirely gone. She held a single, heavily redacted intake form in her hand.
"Emily, Nathan. We have a situation," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a serious whisper. "A new intake just arrived at the front gates. She bypassed the standard hotline and drove here straight from the airport. She is absolutely terrified."
"Who is she?" Emily asked, immediately shifting into crisis mode. "Does she need medical attention?"
"Physically, she is unharmed," Rachel replied, looking nervously at the intake form. "But her husband is incredibly powerful. She says he has frozen her bank accounts, tracked her phone, and holds all her identification. Her name is Sarah Thorne."
Nathan froze, his coffee cup pausing halfway to his mouth. "Sarah Thorne? As in, the wife of State Senator Harrison Thorne?"
"Yes," Rachel nodded grimly. "She says he has been using his political influence to commit massive financial fraud, tying the debts entirely to her name. She heard about Clearview through a whispered rumor at a charity gala. She has nowhere else to go. If her husband finds out she is here, he won't just come for her. He will use the entire state apparatus to come for this foundation."

Emily looked at the golden-seamed plate resting on the kitchen shelf. She remembered the fear of fighting a man who believed the world belonged to him.
"Bring her in," Emily said without hesitation. "Clearview was built for exactly this."
