Chapter 21

|

The following morning, the atmosphere inside Clearview was tense with anticipation. They were waiting for the federal machinery to move, a process that could take hours or agonizing days. Emily tried to maintain a sense of normalcy, helping Katherine organize a legal empowerment workshop in the communal kitchen, but her phone was never more than an inch from her hand.

At exactly 11:00 AM, the news broke, not with a quiet phone call, but with a massive, explosive headline that dominated every major news network across the country.

Katherine turned up the volume on the kitchen television. A breathless reporter was standing live outside the opulent downtown headquarters of Senator Harrison Thorne's campaign office.

"Breaking news this hour," the reporter announced, struggling to be heard over the sound of hovering helicopters. "The FBI has just executed a massive, coordinated raid on the offices of State Senator Harrison Thorne. Multiple sources confirm that federal agents are currently seizing hard drives, financial ledgers, and communication devices as part of an international investigation into massive financial fraud and money laundering."

The camera panned to show heavily armed federal agents carrying dozens of cardboard boxes out of the sleek glass building.

"We are also receiving reports that European authorities, acting on an emergency request from the US Department of Justice, have raided a private wealth management firm in Geneva, Switzerland, freezing over eighty million dollars in hidden assets connected to a shell company known as Apex Financial," the reporter continued.

A collective gasp echoed through the Clearview kitchen. Several survivors, who had been quietly eating breakfast, stopped and stared at the screen in absolute shock and awe.

Sarah Thorne walked slowly into the kitchen, wrapped in a thick cardigan, her eyes glued to the television. She watched as her husband, the man who had tormented her, controlled her, and threatened to destroy her, was escorted out of his building by two stern-faced FBI agents. He was not in handcuffs yet, but his face was ashen, his arrogant posture completely broken.

"It's over," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking with disbelief. She turned to look at Emily, tears welling in her eyes. "He can't hide it anymore. The whole world knows."

Emily walked over and wrapped her arms tightly around Sarah in a fierce, protective embrace.

"The whole world knows, Sarah," Emily affirmed, holding her close. "He doesn't own the narrative anymore. You do. You are free."

Rachel and Robert shared a look of profound triumph, while Katherine smiled, resting both hands on her cane. The system that had protected Thorne for so long had finally been brought down by the relentless pursuit of the truth.
