Chapter 27

As the year drew to a close, Clearview held its annual winter fundraising gala. Unlike the lavish, intimidating spectacles Daniel used to throw to flex his wealth and connections, the Clearview gala was a warm, joyous celebration of survival and community. The event was held in the large, renovated ballroom of the headquarters, decorated with simple, elegant white lights and massive floral arrangements donated by a local survivor-owned business.
The room was filled with advocates, pro-bono attorneys, generous donors, and most importantly, survivors who had successfully rebuilt their lives.
Katherine was holding court near the front of the room, looking radiant in a deep plum dress, leaning elegantly on her polished wooden cane. She was enthusiastically recounting a story to a group of young lawyers about how she had recently aggressively negotiated a better contract for the foundation's new security system.
Emily stood near the back of the room with Nathan, watching her mother thrive.
"She is an absolute force of nature," Nathan laughed, sipping a glass of sparkling water. "I think half the security firm is terrified of her."
"She got it from my grandmother," Emily smiled, a deep affection warming her heart. "They are women who know exactly how to rebuild after a disaster."
The music softened, and Robert stepped up to the small wooden podium at the front of the room. He tapped the microphone gently, drawing the crowd's attention.
"Welcome, everyone, to our third annual Clearview celebration," Robert began, his rich, authoritative voice filling the room. "Tonight, we are not just celebrating the millions of dollars in fraudulent debt we have successfully erased, or the hundreds of families we have relocated to safety. We are celebrating the fundamental human right to live entirely free from fear."
The crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause.

"And none of this," Robert continued, gesturing toward the back of the room, "would be remotely possible without the vision, the unbelievable courage, and the relentless determination of our founder. Please, join me in thanking Emily Whitmore-Hayes."
The applause grew deafening. The entire room turned toward Emily, their faces filled with genuine, profound gratitude. Emily felt tears prick the corners of her eyes, but she didn't hide them. She smiled, leaning securely against Nathan, and waved humbly to the crowd.
