Chapter 30

The transition from winter to spring brought a vibrant, undeniable energy to the city, and a deep, comforting rhythm to Emily and Nathan’s life together. Six months had passed since the winter gala, and the days had settled into a beautiful, predictable routine that Emily cherished more than she had ever thought possible. There were no hidden agendas in their home, no walking on eggshells, and absolutely no fear.
On a bright Tuesday morning, Emily sat at the small kitchen island of their house, sipping a cup of dark roast coffee while Nathan attempted to perfect his latest culinary obsession: homemade crepes. Flour dusted his dark blue dress shirt, and a smudge of batter rested comically on his cheek.
"I am telling you, Emily, it’s all in the wrist action," Nathan declared, expertly flipping a thin crepe in the skillet. "If I wasn't a world-class attorney, I would absolutely open a Parisian cafe."
"I think you should stick to the law, counselor," Emily laughed, reaching over to wipe the flour from his cheek. "But I will admit, these are significantly better than the burnt pancakes from last year."
"Progress is a beautiful thing," Nathan smiled, sliding the perfect crepe onto a plate and setting it in front of her. "Eat up. We have a massive board meeting at ten, and Robert is already texting me about the quarterly budgets."
Emily’s smile softened as she looked at her husband. Every morning with Nathan felt like a quiet victory against the darkness of her past. They ate together in comfortable, loving silence before heading out to the Clearview headquarters.
However, the peaceful morning evaporated the moment they walked through the heavy front doors of the foundation. Rachel was waiting in the lobby, her usual bright demeanor replaced by a mask of strict, focused urgency. She held a thick, blue intake folder tightly against her chest.
"I'm glad you're both here early," Rachel said, not wasting time on pleasantries. "We have a situation that bypasses our standard protocols. A young woman arrived at the gates twenty minutos ago. She is completely terrified, and she refused to give her real name to the security desk."
"Is she injured?" Emily asked, immediately shifting into her executive mode.
"Not physically," Rachel replied, leading them quickly down the hallway toward the secure intake rooms. "But she is shaking like a leaf. She says her husband is tracking her every move. She wouldn't even bring her cell phone or her smartwatch inside. She threw them into the storm drain across the street before walking up to the gate."
Nathan frowned, adjusting his briefcase. "Digital stalking. It's becoming a terrifyingly common tactic."

"It's worse than standard tracking," Rachel whispered as they reached the door of the intake room. "I finally got her to give me her name. It’s Chloe Croft. Her husband is Damian Croft, the CEO of Omni-Tech Solutions."
Emily felt a cold chill run down her spine. Damian Croft was a Silicon Valley titan, a man whose cybersecurity firm contracted with half the state's government agencies. If he was using his own tech to abuse his wife, they were about to go to war with a ghost who controlled the digital world.
