Chapter 26

|

The weekend arrived with a quiet, domestic peace that Emily cherished more than anything else in the world. She and Nathan were spending Saturday morning in their small, cozy home located just a few miles away from the Clearview headquarters. They intentionally kept their private residence modest and entirely separate from the foundation, ensuring they always had a sanctuary that belonged exclusively to them.

Nathan was in the kitchen, attempting to bake a complicated loaf of sourdough bread, a new hobby he had enthusiastically adopted with wildly varying degrees of success. Flour covered his apron, his hands, and a significant portion of the kitchen counter.

Emily sat at the small breakfast table, drinking coffee and laughing as Nathan aggressively kneaded the dough.

"I am telling you, Emily, this is the one," Nathan declared confidently, wiping a smudge of flour off his forehead with the back of his wrist. "The yeast is perfectly active. The hydration levels are optimal. This bread is going to win awards."

"You said that last week, and we ended up using the loaf as a doorstop for the garage," Emily teased mercilessly, taking a sip of her coffee.

"That was a structural anomaly," Nathan defended himself, grinning broadly. "This is art."

Emily watched him, feeling an overwhelming surge of love and gratitude. There were no performances here. No walking on eggshells, no careful calculations to avoid setting off a hidden temper. Nathan was just a kind, brilliant, slightly messy man who loved her completely and unconditionally.

He didn't need her to be smaller so he could feel bigger. He celebrated her victories, stood fiercely by her side during her battles, and never once tried to control her narrative.

Nathan placed the dough into a proofing basket and washed his hands. He walked over to the table and sat down across from her, his warm brown eyes locking onto hers.

"You look very far away," Nathan observed softly, reaching across the table to take her hand. "What are you thinking about?"

"I was just thinking about how incredibly ordinary this is," Emily smiled, squeezing his hand tightly. "Flour on the counters. Coffee in the morning. A quiet Saturday. For a very long time, I didn't think I was allowed to have ordinary. I thought my life was destined to be a constant, terrifying performance."

Nathan brought her hand to his lips and kissed it gently.

"You deserve every ordinary, beautiful, boring, flour-covered moment, Emily," Nathan said sincerely. "You earned your peace."
