Chapter 37

Emily asked Mark to meet her in the basement archives room late that evening. The room was isolated, surrounded by thick concrete walls. Mark walked in looking exhausted, carrying a stack of blank intake forms. He was a young man in his late twenties, but the heavy dark circles under his eyes made him look significantly older.
"You asked to see me, Mrs. Hayes?" Mark asked nervously, shifting his weight from foot to foot.
Emily didn't yell. She didn't accuse him with dramatic flair. She simply walked over and closed the heavy steel door, locking it with a loud click.
"I know you leaked Chloe Croft's location to Damian, Mark," Emily said softly, leaning against a filing cabinet.
Mark froze. The color drained entirely from his face, and the stack of papers slipped from his trembling hands, scattering across the concrete floor. He didn't try to deny it. He simply collapsed against the wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor, burying his face in his hands.
"I am so sorry," Mark sobbed, his voice breaking with genuine, raw despair. "I didn't want to do it, Emily. I swear to God I didn't want to hurt her."
"Then why did you?" Emily asked, maintaining a calm, empathetic tone. She recognized the crushing weight of blackmail when she saw it.
"My younger brother," Mark wept, looking up with tear-filled eyes. "He got into serious trouble with some dangerous people online last year. Huge gambling debts. Croft's security firm somehow bought the debt. Croft contacted me last week. He said if I didn't tell him exactly where Chloe was moving, he would have my brother arrested for wire fraud and physically ruined in prison. He sent me pictures of my brother’s apartment to prove he was watching him."
Emily felt a surge of pure disgust for Damian Croft. He didn't just abuse his wife; he weaponized the love people had for their families to turn them into pawns.
Emily walked over and knelt on the floor in front of Mark. She didn't see a traitor; she saw a victim of the exact same systemic control she had fought her entire life.
"Mark, look at me," Emily said gently, placing a hand on his trembling shoulder. "Croft is a terrorist. But you do not have to be his hostage anymore."

"He will destroy my brother, Emily," Mark cried.
"He won't," Emily promised fiercely. "Nathan is a former federal prosecutor. We will place your brother in protective custody by midnight tonight. We will protect your family. But in exchange, I need you to do exactly what I say. I need you to lie to Damian Croft one last time."
