Chapter 19

|

The police captain looked from Emily’s unwavering, fierce expression to the suddenly pale and silent Senator Thorne. Recognizing that he was standing in the middle of a massive political and legal landmine, the captain wisely decided to step back.

"Senator," the captain said, clearing his throat awkwardly. "Given the conflicting medical evaluations and the pending federal litigation, my officers cannot enforce this hold without a higher judicial review. We are going to withdraw for now."

Thorne’s jaw clenched so tightly it looked as though his teeth might shatter. He glared at Emily with a hatred so pure and intense it was almost palpable. But he was a politician first and foremost; he knew when a public scene was turning disastrously against him.

"This isn't over, Emily," Thorne hissed quietly, stepping close to the iron gate. "You think you can play in the deep water, but you are going to drown. I will tear this house down brick by brick."

"Many men have tried," Emily replied calmly, not taking a single step back. "They are all currently serving time. Have a safe drive home, Senator."

Thorne turned on his heel, marching back to his sleek black town car. The medical transport van and the police cruisers followed closely behind, slowly dispersing from the front of the foundation.

Robert let out a long, heavy breath and unlocked the pedestrian gate for Emily and Rachel.

"That was incredibly close," Robert muttered, leaning heavily on his cane. "If he had brought a federal marshal instead of local police, I couldn't have stopped them."

"He didn't use a federal marshal because he knows a federal judge would look too closely at the paperwork," Emily said, walking briskly toward the main building. "Where is Sarah? Is she okay?"

"She is in your office with Nathan," Robert replied, following her inside. "She watched the entire thing on the security cameras. I think seeing you stand up to him just changed her life."

Emily pushed open the door to her office. Sarah was sitting on the sofa, tears streaming down her face, but they were no longer tears of terror. They were tears of profound, overwhelming relief. Nathan stood nearby, offering a reassuring smile.

"You didn't let him take me," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "I have never seen anyone tell him no before. I didn't think it was possible."

Emily walked over and sat beside her on the sofa, taking Sarah's hands in hers.

"It is always possible, Sarah," Emily said gently. "Abusers rely on the illusion of absolute power. They want you to believe they control the entire world. But they don't. They only control the shadows. The moment you drag them into the light, they realize how small they actually are."
