Chapter 8 - The Millions in the Trust

|

At 8:00 AM the following morning, my corporate attorney, Arthur Pendelton, arrived at my house carrying two heavy leather briefcases.

We sat in my private study with the door locked while Clara kept the children occupied in the garden.

Arthur reviewed the false passports, the altered prenuptial documents, and the hidden USB drives I had recovered from Vanessa’s vanity table. As he scanned the digital files on his laptop screen, his face grew progressively paler.

“Adrian,” Arthur said, taking off his gold-rimmed glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. “This woman isn't just an opportunistic gold-digger. She’s a professional operative.”

“What did you find on the flash drives?” I asked, leaning forward across the mahogany desk.

“Bank accounts,” Arthur replied, turning the laptop screen toward me. “Dozens of them across offshore jurisdictions in Panama and the Cayman Islands. But look at the primary beneficiary names.”

I leaned in to read the screen.

Every single offshore trust was tied directly to a firm called Apex Asset Management.

“Apex Asset Management was the primary creditor that tried to aggressively buy out your late wife’s estate two years ago,” Arthur explained, his voice grim. “When Sarah passed away, her family’s multi-million dollar shipping trust was placed into an irrevocable fund reserved exclusively for Emma and Olivia upon their eighteenth birthdays.”

I frowned. “Right. The money can't be touched by anyone unless both children die before reaching adulthood, or if a court-appointed sole guardian declares total physical incapacity.”

Arthur tapped the screen with his pen.

“If Emma had fallen down those marble stairs yesterday,” Arthur said softly, “and if Olivia had met a similar 'accident' later... Vanessa, as your legally wedded wife and primary legal guardian following your sudden medical decline, would have gained immediate, undisputed access to a forty-five million dollar liquidity fund.”

The room felt completely devoid of oxygen.

It was a grand execution plan.

Phase one: marry me and insert herself into my estate.

Phase two: slowly poison me to impair my cognitive abilities and weaken my physical health.

Phase three: systematically eliminate my children under the guise of tragic household accidents, leaving her as the sole controller of a fortune.

“She almost pulled it off,” I whispered, terror gripping my lungs.

“She would have,” Arthur corrected grimly. “If your twelve-year-old daughter hadn't been smart enough to check the hidden security feeds.”

Before I could answer, my cell phone rang loudly on the desk.

It was Detective Miller from the county police department.

I hit the speaker button immediately. “Detective? Tell me she’s locked up.”

There was a long, uncomfortable pause on the line before Detective Miller spoke.

“Mr. Vance... we have a serious problem. Vanessa Reed just posted bail.”
