Chapter 13 - Setting the Trap

My hands tightened around the armrest of the SUV until my knuckles turned white.
Inside the hangar, Julian was outlining a cold, desperate plan.
“His private motorcade leaves his estate at 8:15 AM tomorrow,” Julian said, his voice echoing off the metal walls of the hangar. “I’ve already hired two men to intercept his vehicle on the expressway bridge. It will look like a high-speed traffic accident. Once Adrian is dead, the press conference is canceled, and my firm takes immediate temporary custody of his minor children as the designated estate trustee.”
“And what about the maid?” Vanessa demanded coldly. “The old woman knows too much.”
“She’ll be taken care of during the confusion,” Julian replied smoothly. “By tomorrow night, the forty-five million dollar trust fund will be under my total legal control. You take your five million cut and leave the country on a private vessel from this dock.”
Beside me in the SUV, Thomas looked at me with a dangerous smile.
“We have them taped, Adrian,” Thomas whispered, tapping his recording device. “Every word of that conspiracy is captured in high-definition digital audio.”
“It’s not enough, Thomas,” I said softly, my mind working at lightning speed.
Thomas frowned. “Not enough? Adrian, this is explicit conspiracy to commit double murder!”
“If we arrest them right now, Julian’s legal team will claim the audio was illegally obtained without a warrant,” I explained coldly. “A high-priced defense attorney like him will fight the wiretap admissibility in court for three years while he stays out on bail.”
I turned my head to look at Thomas.
“I don't want them fighting this in court for three years, Thomas. I want them caught in the act of executing the crime.”

“What are you thinking?”
“We let them think their plan is working,” I said, a cruel smile touching my lips for the first time in days. “We set a trap for them at the bridge tomorrow morning—and we invite the State Police SWAT team to be the welcoming committee.”
