Chapter 7 - Clara's Quiet Warning

|
I carried the black leather pouch downstairs into the kitchen where Clara was quietly brewing a pot of chamomile tea.
I laid the false passports and the legal documents on the wooden island table.
Clara looked down at the items, her expression darkening, but she didn't look entirely surprised.
“You knew something was wrong, didn't you?” I asked softly, pulling out a stool and sitting down opposite her.
Clara poured two cups of tea, setting one down in front of me before leaning against the counter, folding her hands into her apron.
“I didn't have proof, Mr. Adrian,” Clara said softly, shaking her head. “If I came to you with just my feelings, you would have thought I was a jealous old servant who didn't want a new mistress in the house.”
“Tell me what you saw, Clara. Everything.”
Clara took a slow breath, remembering.
“Three months ago, I caught her in your private home office late at night,” Clara whispered. “She told me she was looking for a notepad, but when I walked in, she was standing over your floor safe, taking photos of documents with a red light on her phone.”
I winced, remembering how I had left my safe combination written inside my private journal in the desk drawer.
“Why didn't you tell me then?”
“I tried to subtle hint at it,” Clara explained, her eyes filled with regret. “I asked you if you had moved your financial files. But you were so happy, Mr. Adrian. You hadn't smiled like that since Mrs. Sarah passed away. I didn't want to break your heart unless I was sure.”
She stepped closer to the table, pointing a calloused finger at the printed trust fund documents.
“And there was something else,” Clara added, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. “Two weeks ago, I found a small glass bottle of tasteless liquid dropped behind the sofa. I thought it was essential oils. But two days later, I saw her putting drops of it into your evening wine.”
My stomach dropped into a deep, icy pit.
“My wine?”
“You complained about having severe stomach migraines and memory fogs all last week, remember?” Clara looked at me with deep concern. “I threw the bottle away in the outdoor bin because I was scared. That was when she started treating me with so much cruelty. She knew I was watching her.”
I stared at the black tea in my cup, realizing with terrifying clarity just how close my family had come to total destruction.

Vanessa wasn't just trying to get rid of my children to secure my wealth.
She was slowly poisoning me, too.
