Chapter 14 - The Sting at the Office

|

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the trap was fully set.

Instead of taking my usual morning route in my armored SUV, I stayed securely inside my home with Olivia, Emma, and Clara, surrounded by four heavily armed private security guards provided by Thomas’s agency.

Meanwhile, a decoy vehicle—a black SUV identical to mine, equipped with bulletproof glass and driven by two undercover state police tactical officers—pulled out of my driveway at precisely 8:15 AM.

I sat at my kitchen table, monitoring the live GPS telemetry feed on my laptop screen alongside Detective Miller and a senior FBI field agent.

On the screen, the red icon representing my decoy vehicle moved steadily along the highway toward the grand expressway bridge over the river.

“Tactical units are in position on both sides of the bridge,” Detective Miller reported, listening to her headset. “We have three unmarked chase cars trailing fifty yards behind your decoy SUV.”

At 8:27 AM, the red icon reached the center span of the suspension bridge.

Suddenly, a heavy commercial dump truck pulled out from an on-ramp, swerving violently across three lanes of traffic, slamming its brakes directly in front of my decoy SUV, blocking all forward movement.

Simultaneously, a dark stolen pickup truck accelerated from behind, slamming hard into the rear bumper of the decoy vehicle, trapping it against the concrete guardrail.

Two masked men leapt out of the pickup truck, pulling suppressed handguns from their coats, sprinting toward the rear passenger doors of my SUV.

“Move, move, move!” the FBI agent barked into his microphone.

Before the two hitmen could reach the handles, four unmarked police vans screeched to a halt surrounding the scene. Dozens of heavily armed FBI SWAT agents poured out from the vehicles, weapons raised.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Get on the ground now!”

The two hitmen froze, dropping their suppressed weapons onto the pavement, throwing their hands into the air as tactical officers tackled them to the ground.

At the exact same moment, three miles away at the industrial waterfront hangar, a secondary tactical entry team breached the metal doors of the boat repair building.

Through the live audio feed connected to Detective Miller’s radio, we heard the flashbang grenades detonate.

“FBI! Nobody move!”

Shouts, glass shattering, and heavy footsteps echoed through the radio speakers, followed ten seconds later by the lead entry officer’s calm voice:

“Primary targets Julian Sterling and Vanessa Reed are in custody. Weapons and escape vessel secured.”

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I had been holding for months.

It was over.
