Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

|
Vanessa’s face went through three distinct transformations in a matter of five seconds.
First came shock—a pale, wide-eyed disbelief that her perfect crime had been captured from an angle she didn't know existed. Next came panic, her eyes darting toward the front door as if calculating her chances of running.
And finally, the mask broke completely.
The soft, gentle woman I thought I knew vanished entirely, replaced by a cold, sneering stranger.
“Adrian—” she began, taking a step toward me.
“Don't speak,” I breathed. My voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a rage so terrifying that even Olivia stepped back toward the staircase. “Don't you dare say another word.”
“It’s not what it looks like!” Vanessa snapped, her voice turning hard and shrill. “That video is misleading! The brake was faulty! I was trying to adjust it!”
“You pushed it,” Olivia said loudly from beside the television, her voice trembling with courage. “I watched you from the top landing. I saw you look at Emma, and I saw you push her. I recorded it on my phone from the camera app because I knew you’d lie!”
Vanessa turned her head and glared at my twelve-year-old daughter with such intense, murderous hatred that my blood went entirely cold.
“You little brat—” Vanessa hissed.
Before she could finish her sentence, I stepped directly into her path, shielding both my daughters with my body. I transferred Emma into Clara’s waiting, eager arms. Clara held the baby tight, weeping openly now, kissing Emma’s forehead over and over again.
I turned back to Vanessa, my hands clenching into tight fists at my sides.
“Get out of my house,” I said, every word dripping with lethal intent.
Vanessa threw her head back and let out a harsh, bitter laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. Gone was the helpless, weeping victim. She crossed her arms, tilting her head with an arrogant, psychopathic smirk.
“Get out?” she echoed mockingly. “Adrian, darling, my name is on the lease agreement for this estate as your domestic partner. You can’t just throw me out because your daughter played a tricky video edit.”
“I am not throwing you out, Vanessa,” I said softly, reaching into my pocket and pulling out my phone.

I tapped three numbers into the keypad and pressed the screen to my ear.
“I’m having the police arrest you for attempted murder.”
